OSTEOPATHY

Regulated in France since 2007, osteopathy is a health profession that uses natural, sustainable, and holistic care methods.

"Osteopathy,  in a systemic approach, after osteopathic diagnosis, conducts mobilizations and manipulations to treat the osteopathic dysfunctions of the human body.

These mobilizations and manipulations are intended to prevent or remedy the dysfunctions in order to maintain or improve the state of health of the patient ... "

- JORF No. 0289 du décembre 2014. Annexe 1

In short, an osteopath diagnoses and treats many health disorders.

The human body possesses multiple systems (digestive, cardiovascular, nervous, immune, etc.) that interact to attain homeostasis. All of these systems react not only with one another inside the body, but also with the external environment. The proper functions of these systems can be disrupted by many causes : trauma, stress, poor diet, poor posture, improper movements, or by recognized pathologies.

The osteopathic approach is to take the time to understand the patient. Osteopaths listen and examine in order to better target the cause of symptoms that the patient may experience. "The systemic approach" of osteopathy is defined by acting on these symptoms and functional disorders that can affect the different bodily systems.

Osteopathy is the practice of manually acting on the body's tissue mobility by making precise and adapted gestures to improve the patient's health.

In France, this profession calls for a 5 year degree after attaining a high-school diploma. The osteopath has "a thorough knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathologies, enabling them to offer safe care to the public, from infants to seniors." - SFDO

A BIT OF HISTORY

Osteopathy has a relatively recent history. In the 19th century, Andrew Taylor Still, an American surgeon and doctor discovered that for the body to be in good health, all the systems and parts of the human body must work harmoniously. His goal was to reestablish the body's optimum operation with less surgical, medical, and pharmacological techniques, for at the time these acts were mostly ineffective and sometimes harmful.

Dr. Still quickly gained a reputation and patients came to Kirksville, Missouri from all over the country to be treated by his hands.

In 1892, Dr. Still created the American School of Osteopathy (today the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine). 22 students in osteopathy graduated having the title D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathy).

In 1917, one of these students, John Martin Littlejohn, went back home to England to create the first osteopathic school in Europe, the British School of Osteopathy in London. He also founded the Journal of Osteopathy.

In 1950, a graduate of the British School of Osteopathy, Paul Geny, opened the first osteopathic school in France, l'Ecole Française d'Ostéopathie in Paris.

Since then, many osteopathic schools opened in France, regulated and approved by the Minister of Social Affairs, Health, and Women's Rights.
